record review: Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks

Albums like Frightened Rabbit’s 2008 release The Midnight Organ Fight come along once in a blue moon, cutting like a knife and drawing more blood than you thought you contained. The problem arises when the band goes back to the drawing board, having perfected the craft of tapping into your innermost demons, because, inevitably, they will falter.

If The Midnight Organ Fight is a splendid Samurai sword, The Winter of Mixed Drinks is a wooden dagger. There is a lot of unrealized potential and you are left with something which doesn’t quite accomplish its purpose.

It is not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, but if it had been released as the band’s debut, I doubt it would have generated half the amount of buzz as its predecessor. It is noticeably less heady than Midnight but ways away more advanced than Sing the Greys. It delivers like an elongated EP, song after song of musical sketches that don’t contain the same ground shifting gusts as the band’s brilliant sophomore release.

I couldn't sleep last night so I made a dash for my ipod...I listened to two albums in full: Contra and The Midnight Organ Fight. and then I was strongly reminded of why I love Vampire Weekend and Frightened Rabbit so much. they are on such polar opposite sides of the musical/happiness spectrum, but they are both SO GOOD. it's insane how two bands can manage to be so musically precise, and tug at all of the right strings in your body, but sound NOTHING alike.

anyways, I fell asleep to Frightened Rabbit and they haunted my dreams.

band of the week: Frightened Rabbit

I am super impressed with this band. I only just heard them for the first time yesterday and am now deeming them band of the week. They are based in Scotland (helloooo accent that accentuates the music to the max) and I am planning to go down to the record shop and buy their two records in the very near future (within the next 48 hours perhaps). They are on tour, be sure to check them out in your area.

Frightened Rabbit - The Modern Leper [mp3 highly recommended!!]
this is one of those songs that gives you chills, and progressively gets better until you're all goosebumped out.
