The Strokes Post #73

Saturday Music Definitions - Night

this post is in honour of three things: great outings with friends filled with music and late night consumption of Mexican food AND the awesome complete set of the Arabian Nights that me mum brought me back from Jordan AND Van Gogh.

The Strokes - Last Nite (The Modern Age EP version) [mp3, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!]
this is VASTLY superior to the song found on Is This It. The Modern Age EP blows me away every time I play it

Beirut - My Night With the Prostitute from Marseilles [mp3]

Kool & the Gang - Ladies' Night [mp3]

The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night [mp3]

Wild Sweet Orange - Night Terrors

The Beegees - Night Fever [mp3]

Beirut- Elephant Gun

current favourite Beirut song (read: current listening obsession):

Beirut - Elephant Gun [mp3]

stunning, simply stunning.

Black Lips played Great American Music Hall last night

and it was incredible. I'm not even going to attempt to describe how insanely awesome it was.

observe, "Drugs":

Black Lips are one of the greatest live acts I've ever seen. catch em if you can, and I promise you that you will become obsessed with the Georgia based band.

I'm hooked now, there's no turning back

Spoon - Trouble (new song)

many thanks to Hippies are Dead for the update

I can listen to Spoon all day long and never tire of them. definitely a band without a bad song. thank you, Britt Daniel, for adding cheer to my already splendid day.

Ryan Adams explains the internet

haha, well, sort of

he is such a babe.

Band of the Week: Band of Horses

not as good as The National, but still pretty great.
the only reason I compare the two bands is that I purchased Everything All The Time right after I had acquired Boxer. strange connections are bound to arise when one purchases copious amounts of music.

oh my, I sound like Virginia Woolf.

in all honesty, though, I think I only prefer The National because I have a huge weakness for baritone voices.

anyhow, Band of Horses come from Seattle, and they have two full length albums out. I am only acquainted with Everything All The Time, but it's an extremely solid album, perfect for a rainy day like today, in fact. their music can warm you up the same way that liquor can. a new album is in the works, more updates about that soon.

for fans of: The Decemberists, Okkervil River, The Shins, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie

Band of Horses - The Funeral [mp3]

Band of Horses - Weed Party [mp3]
Band of Horses - ST. Augustine [mp3]

you guys should watch this performance, the sound quality is amazing:

classic. contender for my all time favourite scene from In Transit.

I've had this track on repeat for a while now. it's like Beck meets Wolfmother with a great psychedelic twist. gotta check these guys out.

Vampire Weekend: fresh new sound on sophomore LP

the new album is almost done, is set for a September release

lead singer Ezra Koening said: "It's definitely going to be a recognisably Vampire Weekend sound, but there are going to be new sounds. We're trying to challenge ourselves not to use the same bag of tricks that we used on the first album – different instruments, stuff like that."

Vampire Weekend- Exit Music (for a film) (Radiohead cover) [mp3]

in my opinion, if a band can cover Radiohead well, they can do anything.

The Lonely Island (ft.Julian Casablancas) - Boombox [mp3]

this song is hilarious. I remember my joy when I first heard it, because I was so thrilled at just hearing the ol' chap sing again. his vocals are superb, too.

Julian sings:
Everything got outta control
The music was so entrancing
Everyone got out on the floor
It was a bunch of old white people dancing
...
Then everyone started to move
People rejoiced instead of financing
Your preconcieved notions were shattered
By the super old white people dancing
...
The music washed away all the hate
And society started advancing
Every demographic was represented
It was a rainbow coalition of dancing
Whoa!
Everyone was wearing fingerless gloves
Whoaaaaaoaaaaaoh!
I saw a spanish guy doing the Bartman
...
Everybody started having sex
The music was way too powerful
A bunch of old people fucking like rabbits
It was disgusting to say the least
Oh!
A boombox can change the world
You gotta know your limits with a boombox
This was a cautionary tale
A boombox is not a toy

Record Review: Black Lips - 200 Million Thousand

I find it hilarious when critics try to analyze Black Lips’ accessibility through their discography. I think it’s safe to say that Black Lips don’t give a fuck about how people receive them or their music, they just do their own thing and see what happens. That being said, I think that their latest album, 200 Million Thousand, is by far their best to date. Not because it encapsulates some masterly crafted theme (as if.) or marks their “musical maturity” or any shit like that. This is their best record simply because each and every one of the songs contained in it soars as a representation of Black Lips themselves: quirky, unrestrained and loud. The album sounds like a midway point between 60’s psychedelia and the late 70s’ punk explosion, which I love. “Short Fuse” evokes the Ramones’ “Chain Saw”, BBBJOT has White Light/White Heat type guitars and “Body Combat” is a great mix of New York Dolls and Pixies. “The Drop That I Hold” sounds like London Calling era Clash—that fantastic refusal to conform to one genre or musical trend. Indeed, you get some hip-hop interspersed throughout 200 Million Thousand, which is first and foremost a rock n roll record. The first half of the album is almost endearing in a sugar rush surge of sweet guitar licks kind of way, while the second half is darker and angrier. The line is drawn between "I'll Be With You" and the song that follows, BBJOT. "Starting Over", the third song on the album, treads the same guitar territory as The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun". In “Old Man”, Cole Alexander sings “somewhere is where I’ll be”, summing up their attitudes quite nicely. Don’t ask questions. Enjoy the music, or fuck off.
4.8/5

Harry Potter VI!!!

HOLY FUCK HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN THIS?
an incredible trailer. and a set release date! July 15th! I am so so so so so so so excited. I am a huge HP geek. I may or may not own all the books, all the movies, all the soundtracks, and a t-shirt.

I love this trailer, too:
Ron: "no, could you introduce me?"
hahaha <3

this looks like it might just be the best film so far.

The Strokes Post #67

The Strokes - This Life (early demo version of Trying Your Luck) [mp3]
I can't decide which one I like better. probably 'Trying Your Luck', but Jules' voice is so raw here, and that solo, it just keeps ringing under my skin.

love love love it.

Sunday Morning Covers

I have a few doozies for you all today:

The Hives - Back in Black (ACDC cover) [mp3, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!]
is anyone else DYING for a new Hives tour? these Swedes are incredible. so much freaking energy on stage. I love it.

Foo Fighters - Tiny Dancer (Elton John cover) (live) [mp3]
it's Dave on acoustic guitar, talking about Almost Famous. it's all quite hilarious, but his singing is killer too. the chorus is especially great

Jamie Cullum - Fronton' (Pharrell cover) (live) [mp3]
this song also shows up on his debut, Twentysomething, but I prefer this version, especially because of how he emphasizes "tear your ass up"

Belle & Sebastian - The Boy with the Thorn in his Side (The Smiths cover) (live) [mp3]

Death Cab for Cutie - This Charming Man (The Smiths cover) [mp3, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!]

this track is from 1996. wow. I was still listening to N'Sync in 1996, when I was seven. I wish I'd been listening to this instead.

The Psychedelic Furs - How Soon is Now (The Smiths cover) [mp3]
really fucking good. I've recently discovered this band, thank you dollar vinyl bins. this is my second favourite Smiths song on Meat is Murder, after "I Want the One I Can't Have"

my obsession with The Smiths might be a little too apparent in this post.
