band of the week: Setting Sun
Setting Sun is a band from Brooklyn with all the right answers. They are like that art teacher who first told you that you could and should colour outside the lines, forever altering your perception of what is beautiful. Their new album, Fantasurreal, combines the delightful weirdness of MGMT with vocals that sound like a more mellow Wayne Coyne, all delivered in the powerful whisper of Snow Patrol or Bright Eyes. In songs like “Make You Feel”, they use horn sections tastefully, like Sufjan Stevens. Their incorporation of classical instruments leans towards the post-rock elements of Sigur Ros, but the execution is extremely subtle. Their music is thoughtfully arranged and displays a myriad of great influences. Give it a listen below.

haha the beginning of this is cute.
I am not digging Win's new look. to me, he will always be a father figure in the world of indie rock and he looks too young with that new haircut. NO, WIN, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED THE LIBERTY OF DETERMINING YOUR OWN IMAGE. YOU ARE PUBLIC DOMAIN NOW.

The Strokes Post #530
there is an amazing review of a Strokes gig HERE written by a thirteen year old kid.
now I dunno if it's karma rewarding me for getting children at the school I teach into The Strokes but I have a media pass for Outside Lands. this means I'm going both days, for free. and this would not have been possible without the high numbers generated by YOU, my readers.
so cheers. from the bottom of my heart. I never thought I'd get to the point where I would go to something like Outside Lands as press. the awesomeness is multiplied tenfold with the fact that MY FAVOURITE BAND EVER are headlining. I was screaming along to "Hard to Explain" this morning on my way to work and I am so ready to lose my Strokes virginity. MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS I AM SO EXCITED FOR SATURDAY. the proper celebration of my twenty first.

new single: Jimmy Eat World - My Best Theory
I was never the biggest fan of Chase This Light, but it seems as though Jimmy Eat World have rekindled their heartfelt, angst ridden Bleed American-y roots
this makes me very very very happy. to me, Jimmy Eat World are horribly underrated and the only redeeming thing about that fact is their consistency in being prolific, humble and genuine

Ben Sollee's bike tour II
info on his first bike tour can be found HERE
"It's not about trying to be 'green' - whatever that means these days - and saving the environment. It's about pace of life and re-localizing. I've spent nearly ten years on the road now and the expectations of the industry are enormous. When you get a call the night before to play late-night TV the next day on the other side of the country you do it. If there's a good money gig but it's 300 miles the other way, you do it. But not if you're on a bicycle. It's a beautiful limitation, because all the reasons you once thought of to avoid these small towns go out the window and the communities become really valuable to us."
