CONTEST: win a copy of a sweet cover songs album

for Christmas, I received a bunch of Starbucks giftcards from co-workers who unwittingly thought "hey, she's young, she must like the place".
little did they know of my hatred towards coffee in general and Starbucks in particular.

I considered using the giftcards to buy containers of tea (Starbucks carries TAZO, one of my faves) and I also recalled that Starbucks usually features cool cds of the indie persuasion, being based in Seattle and all. I actually ended up giving the giftcards to my mum, who is a coffee addict.

Sweetheart '10 is Starbucks' third compilation of its kind: it features covers of love songs by indie rock artists. it's mellow and laid back, not at all a flaring of you-know-which-holiday which is just around the corner (even though the compilation's release probably was timed around February for this particular reason).

if you have some Starbucks giftcards burning a hole in your pocket, I would recommend picking this up and playing it loudly as you cook or lie down on your floor in solitude. because, like a lot of great music, this compilation features songs that are best enjoyed in silence and alone. the songs have a certain distant quality about them, like speaking to someone overseas over the telephone. the album had a similar effect on me as Dark Night of the Soul, which is a damn high compliment if I do say so myself. I was particularly excited when I saw that Spoon took part of this project, but my favourite thing on here, by far, is Yo La Tengo doing "You Make Me Feel Good" by The Zombies.

you can buy the album (and the new Spoon album haha) HERE

and here is the tracklisting:

I posted a cover of "Spanish Harlem Incident" by James & Robert Mercer recently, which was courtesy of a reader of mine named Holly who was in on the compilation. she sent 4 giveaway copies my way, so if you'd like to be in the running for one, leave a comment and tell me what your favourite cover or love song is (or both!)

contest winners will be announced in two weeks, on 9th February. good luck!

contest winners announced!

okaaaaaaaaaaay so the winners were chosen randomly, but in a special way.

what I did was I compiled a list of the songs which I loved this year. the ones which continuously warranted that little "repeat song" icon. they didn't have to be released this year, they just had to be songs which I really adored this year: the songs I could not get enough of.

I ordered the songs into a playlist which was sorted alphabetically by artist, and then made a corresponding list of people who entered the contest (ordered chronologically). finally, I put the playlist on shuffle and matched up the winning songs with their corresponding entrants. viola!

also, this way, everyone gets a little treat, a nice zip file of 42 songs. if you're interested in what your "song" was, you can open up the word file and figure it out based on the track number. trust me, the mix is well worth checking out =)

so, without further ado,

the winners of the TELEKINESIS album (and their corresponding songs):

Mary Shea [Audrye Sessions - "Perfect, Sometimes"]
K. [Death Cab for Cutie - "I Will Possess Your Heart"]
Charles [My Bloody Valentine - "When You Sleep"]
Fred [Stereophonics - "Maybe Tomorrow"]
Shane [The Wombats - "Let's Dance to Joy Division"]

(these guys were smart to mention my #1 album in their response because it heightened their chances of winning. it's basic Algebra II. what happened after I had 5 winners was I kept hitting the shuffle button until it landed on 5 people who requested Telekinesis. there were fewer of them, you see, so the laws of permutation tell us...oh man I'll stop now)

the winners of ANY ALBUM OF THEIR CHOICE [from the top ten or honourable mentions] (and their corresponding songs):

Nate [Beirut - "Elephant Gun"]
Edith [Casper Bangs - "Queen of Hearts"]
Maryanne Sullivan [Cage the Elephant - "Back Against the Wall"]
Olivia [Free Energy - "Dream City"]
Connor Green [Mister Loveless - "Just Thoughts"]

so, what I need from you guys now is a quick email, specify if you'd prefer CD or vinyl, include your mailing address, and, if you're in the latter group, tell me which album you want.

congrats to the winners, thanks to everyone who entered the contest, and rest assured, there will be many more giveaways in the future!

CONTEST: win a free album of your choice!

first off, I'd like to apologize for the ads on my site. I should have more integrity than that, I know, but here is the consolation:

when I signed up for the MOG network, I did so with two intentions:
a. to get my site exposed to more people
b. to use the revenue to give away music that I love.

so here's the dealio. I am offering five readers any of the albums from my favourite album list. from the top ten or from the honourable mentions. vinyl or cd. anywhere in the world.

so leave a comment below, tell me how you found Music Induced Euphoria, and good luck to everyone!

winners will be announced in one month, on the 30th of December.

UPDATE:
in addition to the five albums I'm giving away, I will also give away five copies of the Telekinesis album. so if you want that one, make sure you mention it in your response.

SPIN contest: win a vinyl copy of Morrissey's latest B-side release
