Chuck Klosterman on Pavement

colour me ecstatic: my favourite music writer just wrote a piece for GQ on PAVEMENT. fuck yes.

"It's not like some Radiohead record, where the whole thing is good. Our records aren't good in that way. Our records are more attitude and style, sort of in a punk way. We're good in the same way the Strokes are good."
oh yes you are, Mr Malkmus. quite worthy of obsessive listening rampages and tattoos, methinks

cheers to Eric at the Ripcord for bringing this article to my attention

Pavement - Cut Your Hair

Pavement sound like my childhood, even though I only started listening to them last year. Stephen Malkmus is just the perfect epitome of the 90's.

I really fucking love this band. lately, when I don't know what to listen to, I put them on. and I am never ever disappointed. they are so no-nonsense. their music offers so much longevity, it's so reliably good. I am so stoked to see them at Coachella, and they're playing the Greek at Berkeley in the summer, too!

a word to the wise: if you don't already know this band, get yourself acquainted... and quick. them and the Pixies, man, have got to be my favourite bands from the 90's. sorry, Nirvana. sorry, Sonic Youth. sorry, Smashing Pumpkins. sorry, 98 degrees.

Classic Track Thursday

Pavement - Summer Babe (Winter Version) [mp3]
from Slanted and Enchanted, the band's 1992 debut.

there are rumours of a Pavement reunion

I don't have much time to write right now (gotta go get ready for work) but I think it'll suffice to say that Stephen Malkmus and Pavement turned the music world upside down. along with Sonic Youth and Pixies, they were the bread and butter indie music of the 90's, and continue to fascinate young listeners and artists alike.

side note: a newer band I like, called The Henry Clay People, have a lead singer with a very similar voice to Malkmus. they also sound like The Replacements, which means they are double awesome.
