record review: Shout Out Louds - Work

On their third full length album, Sweden’s Shout Out Louds have perfected the craft of creating atmospheric indie pop. Effortlessly incorporating sounds as varied as The Cure and Paul Simon, the album has a certain warmth about it that makes for a most soothing decompressor—creating an effect as far removed from the album title as possible.

The opening track, “1999” is wonderfully nostalgic and paves the way for a whirlpool of emotions and unconscious memory. “Walls” is ominous in a way only Europeans can do it, and “Play the Game” echoes the Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979”. The band fearlessly blends the best of the 90s, meshing pop-punk and Brit-pop elements to create songs that are simultaneously worthy of sways and tears. The best track on here is the glimmering “Paper Moon”, which hosts layers as perfect as a cake from your favourite bakery. This album is a must listen, so don’t let it slip under your radar.

You sold me on that. Love the album cover too - reminds me of Huey Lewis & The News!
