The Strokes Post #266

I love Berkeley sososo much. I love that I can talk to everyone about music there, and that almost everyone can keep up. so I got together with a very good friend of mine, told her I felt like getting a tattoo, and she accompanied me. the tattoo artist who did my tattoo just so happened to be the only guy in the shop who liked The Strokes, and he asked me if I liked The Hives and I said "hell yes, I've seen them in concert twice" and he asked if I had heard their early stuff and we started gushing about how far superior Barely Legal is to any of their other albums (I have that one on vinyl, too, it's one of my favourites) and how The Hives kicked so much ass when they had that unrefined punk sensibility about them. so anyhow, here is my new tattoo.

the cool thing is, it is exactly centered to MY perspective, it's off center when I hold it up to a mirror. it's my perspective that counts.

so, we're continuing our outing, we're walking towards a thrift shop where I wanted to go to pick up something to wear for Jules' show (I found the most amaaaaaaaaaaazing dress, fits like a glove) but what do we see on the wall?

I have never in my life seen any Strokes advertisements of any sort. and it just so happens to be next to the Them Crooked Vultures poster, and also the Nirvana one. we'll ignore the ad for Glee just for now. I realized that I didn't have any photos of my friend Ayesha, so we had a hobo photograph us.

Ayesha has actually been with me every time I've gotten a tattoo. I wanted to get my first one right when I turned 18, but then I met Ayesha, who wouldn't turn 18 until May and I decided to wait 8 months for her so we could get them together. we went the day after her birthday. the last two times I've visited her in Berkeley, I've gotten tattoos, and we made this half joke, half serious decision that each time I visit her, I'll get another tattoo.

so then we step into Rasputin (a record shop, I get my records at the one near my house), and unlike the Campbell Rasputin, which had ONE copy of Phrazes, these guys have FREE POSTERS as giveaways for people buying the album, and dozens of copies of the album on vinyl on display. I tell the chick who worked there I wanted a poster, and she handed one to me as I explained that I had bought one in Campbell. she didn't need to hear justification, those guys know my face almost as much as the people at Amoeba.

later, I went to Amoeba with another friend, and guess what I found?

holy smokes, I know. every time I'm in any record shop, I look under J for any non-remastered Joy Division vinyl and my efforts are ALWAYS in vain. until now, hellooooooo this is their very first compilation album.

so to finish off this commemmoration of my excellent day yesterday, I will post a short but excellent bootleg. it's a radio session, and the story at the beginning is well worth listening to. enjoy.

I think everybody who regularly reads this site and my site should get the same tattoo. It'll be like a secret association of hardcore Strokes fans all across the country; our own little brotherhood of sorts.

By the way, I really liked the deejay's story about going to 2A before playing Soma.

I think I just might, once I'm eighteen. We'll see. I'm not worried about the pain, just about the whole regretting it later thing. I'm scared of the day I don't like the Strokes anymore. Hopefully that day will be never, but I've never liked a band this long. Or this much. I always grow sick of them.

thanks everyone =)
Eric, that's a brilliant idea. except a lot of my regular readers aren't huge Strokes fans. a bunch of them are but let's say the loyal Strokes Post readers should all (at least consider) get(ting) this tattoo.

Mary Shea, it didn't hurt all that much. I was surprised, I expected it to be super painful, 'cause the wrist area is so sensitive and the skin is so thin, but the chest one hurt a HELL of a lot more. the 12:51 and my eighth note both took only a couple of minutes to complete. it's not even as bad as going to the dentist.

you wouldn't regret it later. even if you stopped liking them (which you won't), you'd appreciate the memories of how much they meant to you in your youth. I think tattoo regrets are bullshit. they aren't meant to mean the same thing forever, but to capture the memories of a fleeting time, like a photograph.

I like eric's idea, I've been a fan on them since I was 15 and now at 23 I like them just the same so the tattoo would be perfect : ) and only strokes fans would know what the tattoo stands for which I like.

Hmmm... if you don't mind me copying you, Hanan, I just might. Good idea Eric, we can recognize one another like some secret society. And I do get a paycheck this week...

And after that I'm moving to CA, jeez, that sounds like an awesome day. Glad you didn't have to work and got to enjoy that stuff instead!

I Like Eric's idea! Iv'e been a hardcore fan since the day I first headr them and that was 5 years ago!I don't think I will ever stop likeing them!thats impossible!I love them too much!

All right, so I think it's settled; 12:51 is the perfect Strokes tattoo.

If you do decide to get a 12:51 on the inside of your left wrist, simply let everyone know in the Strokes posts community beforehand and then send Hanan the picture afterwords.

And then we'll all be apart of the secret(ly cool) society.

Katie said...

I'm going to get one this week if I don't chicken out.

...Anyone else?!?!!!

HANAN YOU ARE SO COOL WITH YOUR INK. AND ONLY REALLY COOL PEOPLE WILL EVER UNDERSTAND IT !!!

And thanks for the bootleg cherie, you always supply us with the best.

Also, go Katie! I love the idea but considering I'm having a panic attack about some bloodtests I'm getting done I'm not so sure following suit would be a good idea.

Okay, convincing enough. Haha 'cause I really want to be a part of a secret society! Once I'm eighteen...

Olivia said...

That sounds amazing!! I have been a hardcore strokes fan for a couple of years.. ever since I heard someday. Once I turn 18 I am getting this tattoo, this idea is awesome.

Hanan said...

no Katie of course I don't "mind", it was technically Eric's idea (but he talks and I actually get shit done) but even if it was my idea, I'd want more people to have it! please do send me photos if y'all decide to get 'em done, I'll post the photos!

how much does it cost around your areas? it's expensive here, I paid the minimum for this one and it was 75 bucks. so worth it though. my Is This It album sleeve on upper arm will be so uber expensive. it'll be in lieu of any mortgage payment, for sure. here's an idea: don't buy houses, get ink instead!

Ps haha secret society reminds me of secret sexy society from here:

OMG i was totally about to reference the secret sexy society but you beat me to it hahahah! hanan I have no concerts, and 4tests in one week, and no substances to get me thru it. and now I am a nikolai watching the secret sexy society from afar because im getting a tattoo!

allie the correction dragon said...

im not getting a tattoo* is what i meant to say

Hanan said...

why nottttttttt Allie? is it because of jido?

ah, just touched mine, and it's at that perfect I'm-forming-a-scab-phase where the tattoo is elevated from the skin and feels amazing. this only lasts about a week and a half and it makes me want to continuously be getting more ink just so I can feel it.

in any case good luck with your exams. do you want to be included in the dystopian novel I'm currently writing? I need some mad scientists.

Katie said...

Oh my god, Hanan, you better show that to Jules when you meeeeeet hiiiiiiim.

Allie the overwhelmed dragon, good luck. Have fun being Nikolai, ooh, this means I'm big enough for boxers and am in the secret sexy society. Hah.
